As we are called in to deal with conflict in so many organisations, one thing that is clear is that there isn’t an unawareness of conflict. People are all-too-familiar with the fact that conflict exists and even the negative effects that staff are experiencing. Of course, people are less inclined to take a view that they are in some way contributing to the conflict, but this makes sense given we all seek to hold as positive a view of ourselves as possible.

All too often, people are almost frozen because they aren’t sure how to act. Should they facilitate some kind of meeting between the people in conflict? If so, should they run the meeting themselves or leave the staff to it? When should they consider an external mediator or facilitator and
